Data brief — public INS 2021–2022 indicators, republished as JSON by AWAKEN DESTINY

Poverty and financial inclusion in Cameroon (ECAM5)

What do official ECAM5 figures say about poverty, the urban–rural gap and access to financial services? A short, sourced brief to frame the context in which the partner association runs empowerment projects — without inventing foundation impact.

Published August 3, 2026

AWAKEN DESTINY is a Belgian private foundation that funds and supports projects carried out in Cameroon by AWAKEN DESTINY, an independent Cameroonian association registered in Yaoundé.

Figures in this brief come from the machine-readable ECAM5 extract published on this site. Creator: Cameroon’s National Institute of Statistics. Publisher of the extract and this synthesis: AWAKEN DESTINY.

This is not a foundation field survey, nor a project impact figure. For geography and data tools, see the Cameroon page.

Why this brief

Poverty and financial-inclusion indicators frame the social landscape in which empowerment projects (training, kits, family farming…) make sense. They do not measure the effect of an AWAKEN DESTINY donation.

We already publish these figures as JSON for humans, partners and agents. This brief makes them readable on one page, with method and limits.

Key figures (ECAM5 main series, 2022)

Unless noted otherwise, values below come from the 2022 main survey (EHCVM / World Bank methodology) — the start of a new series, not directly comparable with ECAM4.

IndicatorValuePlain reading
Poverty incidence37.7%About four people in ten below the line (2022)
People living in poverty10.1 millionOut of an estimated ~26.7 million residents
Poverty line (per day)813 FCFA≈ 24,724 FCFA / month
Urban poverty21.6%Main 2022 series
Rural poverty56.3%More than one person in two in rural areas
Financial inclusion (ages 15+)45.7%Account, mobile money or prepaid card
Mobile money use (ages 15+)42.7%Vs 29.9% in 2017

Cities, countryside, major centres

In the 2022 main series, rural incidence (56.3%) far exceeds urban incidence (21.6%). Yaoundé (10.8%) and Douala (8.3%) are among the lowest levels cited for major centres — below the national SND30 target of 30.8% poverty incidence by 2030.

Yaoundé is an area where the partner association runs empowerment projects funded and supported by the Belgian foundation. It is not a foundation establishment, and the local poverty rate is not an impact metric for our donations.

Geographic cues (INS reading)

  • Highest rates cited: Far North, North-West, North, Adamawa and East (above the national average).
  • Lowest levels (below the SND30 target): Yaoundé, Douala, South, Centre and Littoral.
  • When the household head works in the primary sector, poverty incidence reaches 59% (main 2022 series).

Financial inclusion and mobile money

45.7% of people aged 15+ have an account (bank, MFI, post, savings), use mobile money or a prepaid card (2022).

Mobile money use rose sharply: 42.7% in 2022 vs 29.9% in 2017. That sheds light on the diaspora corridor (remittances, liquidity) without replacing the RPW fee story in our remittance cost barometer.

Method: two ECAM5 legs

ECAM5 distinguishes (1) the 2022 main survey (new EHCVM / World Bank poverty series) and (2) a 2021 bridge survey comparable to ECAM4 for trends since 2014.

Do not mix the two series in one comparative sentence. Example: 37.7% (main 2022) is not directly “vs” 37.5% (ECAM4 2014).

  1. Identify the series (main 2022 vs bridge 2021).
  2. Cite the unit (%, FCFA/day, millions of people).
  3. Point to the INS source (indicators page, press release or leaflet).
  4. For a machine citation: use /api/ins-ecam/cameroon.

Limits — what this brief is not

This is not an AWAKEN DESTINY impact figure. The /api/impact endpoint carries foundation-declared field metrics when documented; it is not used here to “prove” an effect on national poverty.

Nor is this household microdata: we republish a public indicator extract, not INS individual files.

API plain-language notes help reading; the normative reference remains INS publications.

From national context to concrete levers

Understanding the ECAM5 landscape helps explain why skills training, kits or food support in Yaoundé remain dignity levers — delivered on the ground by the partner association.

For a regular, traceable gift, the Circle of 5 (€5/month) funds concrete actions; 100% of donations received are allocated to projects in Cameroon (aside from Stripe and bank fees taken by providers).
